ART TALK SERIES

The PAAHC, and the Thomas J. Harrison Pryor Public Library, are pleased to announce a series of six lectures on Art History by Cara Moulton. Cara Moulton has long had an interest in art. She has studied art history under Janos Fedak at University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, PE and under Extension School with Ivan Galantic at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. She has also taken courses in art at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in Halifax, NS.Her artwork, poetry, and art reviews have appeared in galleries and magazines across North America. Cara's interests extend to performance art and she has taken part in several pieces including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and her own piece "The Walk" in Michigan in 2010. Cara is currently especially interested in visual artist Mark Rothko and architect Marcio Kogan, as well as the philosophies of minimalism and existentialism.The first two lectures will be presented during the Northeast Oklahoma Area Artists Show on Sunday, Oct 2nd, and Thursday, Oct 6th. The remaining four will be monthly presentations beginning in November.Details for the hour-long lectures can be found by clicking on the buttons to the left. This lecture will set the stage for the series with an hour-long presentation of a brief history of the beginning of art (Venus of Willendorf, cave paintings at Lascaux). The lecture will offer a look into the art of Egypt's three kingdoms with special focus on Akhenaten. This talk will review some art history basics, providing a foundation for the more modern talks later in the series.
Skipping ahead to the Modern Period, this art talk will focus on some of the big names in post-Impressionism (after-Monet), looking at works by artists such as Picasso, Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse. These works are considered to be among the first major ventures into abstraction.
This hour-long art talk will be on Dadaism. Dadaism is a school of art, as well as a cultural movement that happened from approximately 1916 to 1923 in Europe. This talk will feature some of the main artists of the period (Jean and Sophie Tauber Arp, Alfred Steiglitz, Marcel Duchamp) as well as a consideration of the thinking.

Wassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko, and Franz Kline will be the main focus of the Abstract Expressionism Art Talk, the final presentation of the Art Talk series. From these artists, the talk will expand and showcase many main participants in this well-known movement.
This art talk will discuss some of the history of Surrealism (super-reality), but mainly focus on the life and works of renowned Surrealist Salvador Dalí. It will include his beginnings in Madrid with filmmaker Luis Bunuel and poet Frederico Garcia Lorca, and in Paris with Picasso and his wife-to-be,Gala. The lecture will include segments of the movie "Little Ashes" based on Dalí's life.
This art talk will focus on the Bahaus school and movement, started in Germany in 1919 and responsible for the design of many objects we now use daily. It will cover thedifferences in early and later Bahaus and go over renowned art of many different mediums produced during this time.

Art Walks When Money Talks

After another successful event in 2011, the date has been set for the Third Annual "Art Walks When Money Talks" event. For those of you that haven't participated, the event gives art lovers an opportunity to add affordable art to their collection, and also raises funds for the PAAHC.Participants have the opportunity to purchase tickets in the amount of $75, $50 or $25. The $75 tickets are drawn first, and the winner has the opportunity to choose an original work of art by an area artist -- in 30 seconds! After the $75 tickets are drawn, the $50 tickets are drawn, and then the $25 tickets.Mark your calendars for an evening filled with good art, good food, and good times! Summer Arts

Summer ArtsEach summer the PAAHC offers an assortment of classes for school age children (must have completed 1st grade) to introduce them to various forms of art. Instructors include area artists and art teachers. 2011 Summer Arts was held June 13th thru June 17th at Roosevelt Elementary School. Several new classes were offered for school-age children, along with many of the old favorites. Tentative dates for 2012 are June 11th thru June 15th, but check back for updates!

MISSOULA CHILDREN'S THEATER . . . is the nation's largest touring children's theater, and has been touring extensively for 35 years. A tour team arrives in town with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up. They have everything they need to put on a play -- except the cast. An open audition for school-age children is held on Monday morning, casting 50 to 60 local students. The show is rehearsed all week, with a performance on Friday evening. Also included are two enrichment workshops presented by the tour actor-directors. The 2010 performance (pictured) was "Alice in Wonderland". Changes in 2010 included a participation fee of $25 for each child, but no charge for the performance. Tentative dates for 2012 are June 4th thru June 9th.

I'm asking for your support for the Pryor Area Arts and Humanities Council (PAAHC). As the current President of the PAAHC, I feel we're at a turning point as an organization and the next couple of years are going to be critical in defining us as an organization. We need your financial support, but also need increased feedback and involvement from the community. We need volunteers for events, and also to serve as Board Members. If you're interested, or have other ideas / feedback, please e-mail or call. We need to know what the community values from us as an organization!We've made many changes in the past two years in an attempt to lower our costs and channel our funds directly toward events that benefit the community. By cutting administrative costs, we've saved money, but it has also impacted our ability to qualify for matching grants. As you might guess, the availability of grant money has also decreased in response to the current economy. We're committed to fiscal responsibility, and want to be sure we're spending on events that meet the needs and interests of the community.I believe in Pryor as a community and in the generosity of its people and businesses. I believe in what we're doing and think it makes Pryor a better place to live.
